Why did you decide to become a champion?

Tackling health inequalities and utilising research to improve the lives of the people in the North East has long been a personal passion of mine.  After speaking to Lisa Bosomworth and Vicky Jackson, I was inspired to become a community champion for Healthwatch.

Using community links to engage, listen and learn is really important as we look to diversify the range of participants consenting into research.  Planning and designing trials based on feedback from the population we serve is vital, ensuring impactful and sustainable results that have the maximum benefit and value for money.  Healthwatch offers the vision, connections, information and expertise to do just that and I can’t wait to get involved!

How does your role help people in South Tees?

I am proud to work in the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Research and Development team, which forms part of the wider Tees Valley Research Alliance.  I currently work as a Senior Research Project Manager in the South Tees Academic Centre for Surgery.

Every medical advance, from new drugs and devices to improving hospital policies and procedures, are a result of research studies, the dedicated staff and the amazing participants that agree to take part in clinical trials.  With the North East continuing to experience a decline in health outcomes, it is imperative that this work grows and becomes targeted towards the biggest priorities.  Viewing healthcare and services in a holistic way, increasing our links and communication with the local community, is a way of ensuring that this can happen.
