Why did you decide to become a champion?
I am a Senior support worker in a supported living service in Middlesbrough for 1st Enable LTD and in our Monthly Speak out meeting we chair for the People we support a couple of the Healthwatch members attended and spoke to the people we support around what Healthwatch do. I found this whole experience very interesting, proactive and give the opportunity for our most vulnerable people to have a voice and be heard in all aspects of their care, support and health needs. I feel that my skills and experience could be beneficial to Heathwatch ST and making a difference in peoples lives would not only be rewarding but would also expand in gaining information and experience from an already established local network through Healthwatch.
How does your role help people in South Tees?
As part of my role, I have a duty of care to ensure that the people we support receive the best care/support required to lead a happy and fulfilled life. As part of contracts monitoring with local authorities, I must be able to evidence that the people we support are regularly receiving health checks, attending appointments and that the people we support are maintaining or progressing in being independent. This also gives me the opportunity to encourage and support when things have no gone well, allowing the people we support to voice their complaints and not accept poor standards.
Do you have any links to the care network and what these are?
I have a good relationship with Middlesbrough Council’s social care team. I liaise with other healthcare professionals such as GP’s, OT’s, Continence services, Epilepsy services etc.
